I offer free one-to-one mentoring for students applying to study in the UK, at undergraduate or postgraduate level. It is best suited to applicants in law, politics, international relations, security studies and related subjects, but students from other social sciences and humanities are welcome to get in touch.
Writing a personal statement for UK universities
The three UCAS questions for 2027 entry, postgraduate statements, using AI tools within the rules, and a checklist before you submit. I am writing detailed guides to each stage of the application.
Who it is for
- Students applying for an undergraduate degree in the UK through UCAS
- Graduates applying for a taught Master’s (such as an LLM, MA or MSc) or a research degree (MRes, MPhil or PhD)
- Applicants aged 18 or over
How I can help
- Shortlisting programmes and universities that suit your background, grades and goals
- Planning your timeline, including UCAS and university deadlines
- Feedback on your personal statement or statement of purpose
- Feedback on research proposals for research degrees
- Feedback on your academic CV
- Finding scholarships and funding you may be eligible for, and planning those applications
- Choosing and briefing your referees
- Preparing for admissions and scholarship interviews
How it works
- Email contact@abbasbinmohd.com with a few lines about your current studies, the level and subject you are applying for, any universities you have in mind, and your deadlines.
- I will reply within one week to say whether I can help and to suggest a plan.
- We usually start with a 30-minute video call, followed by written feedback on your drafts.
- You revise, and I give up to two further rounds of feedback on each document.
Ground rules
What to send, and what not to send
- Please send drafts only after I have replied.
- Do not send passport details, financial documents, health information or anything else you would not want kept in an email inbox.
- I keep your emails and drafts only while I am mentoring you, and delete them within 12 months afterwards.
What I do not do
- I do not write statements, proposals or any other application documents for you. My feedback is on your own work, and universities expect the writing to be yours.
- I do not advise on visas or immigration. For student visa questions, please use the guidance on GOV.UK, UKCISA’s advice for international students, or an adviser regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority.
- I do not contact universities or scholarship bodies on your behalf.
- I cannot guarantee admission, a scholarship or any other outcome.
- I am not affiliated with any university or recruitment agency, and I receive no commission from universities.
Frequently asked questions
Is mentoring really free?
Yes, it is currently free of charge. If that ever changes, it will be stated clearly on this page, and it will not affect students I am already mentoring.
How many students do you mentor?
A small number at a time, so that each student gets proper attention. If I cannot take you on, I will tell you and point you to free resources.
My deadline is very close. Can you still help?
Possibly. Please give the exact date in your first email.
Do you only help law students?
No. Law, politics, international relations and security studies are where I can help most, but the application process is similar across the social sciences and humanities.
This mentoring is general guidance on academic applications. It is not legal advice or immigration advice. How I handle your information is explained in my Privacy Policy.
